How to Scan a QR Code on iPhone — 4 Methods

Every iPhone from iPhone 5s running iOS 11 or later has a built-in QR code scanner. No app download needed.

Method 1: Built-in Camera App (Fastest — Works on All iPhones)

This is the easiest and most common method.

1. Open the Camera app — swipe left from the lock screen, or tap the Camera icon
2. Point the camera at the QR code — hold it steady about 15–30 cm (6–12 inches) away
3. Wait for the yellow frame — the Camera will recognise the QR code and show a border
4. Tap the notification — a banner appears at the top of the screen (or a popup). Tap it to open the URL, WiFi, or contact

Tip: You do not need to take a photo. Just hold the camera still for 1–2 seconds.

Enable QR Code Scanning in Camera Settings

If the Camera app is not scanning, check this setting:

1. Open Settings
2. Tap Camera
3. Make sure Scan QR Codes is toggled on (green)

Method 2: Control Center (iOS 16+)

Apple added a dedicated QR code scanner button to Control Center in iOS 16.

1. Open Control Center — swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen
2. Tap the QR Code scanner icon (it looks like a small QR code)
3. Point at the QR code — the scanner opens in fullscreen
4. Tap the link when it appears

Add the scanner to Control Center:

Settings → Control Center → tap the + next to "Code Scanner"

Method 3: Scan QR Code from a Photo or Screenshot

If you have a QR code saved as an image, you have two options:

iOS 16 and later (Live Text)

1. Open the image in the Photos app
2. Press and hold on the QR code in the image
3. A context menu appears — tap Open in Safari (or the relevant action)

Problem 1: Camera shows the QR code but nothing happens

• Try cleaning the camera lens with a microfibre cloth
• Move the camera slightly closer or further from the QR code

Problem 2: QR code looks fine but won't scan

• Check the lighting — use natural light or move to a brighter area
• Make sure the QR code is not damaged, folded, or printed with too little contrast
• The QR code may be too small — try scanning from closer

Problem 3: Scanning from a screen (TV, monitor)

• Reduce screen glare by changing your angle
• Increase the QR code size on the source screen if possible
